Farmers Field Level Insurance

Crop insurance in India, particularly for field-level coverage, is dominated by the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). As of 2026, the system has become highly digitized to ensure that claims reach farmers faster after bad weather events.

1. Which Companies/Government Provide Insurance?

The government designs the scheme, but implementation is handled by a mix of public and private insurance companies assigned to specific districts.

Government Bodies: Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (Central) and the State Agriculture Department.

Major Companies in Maharashtra (2026): Agriculture Insurance Company of India (AIC), HDFC ERGO, ICICI Lombard, Bajaj Allianz, and Reliance General Insurance.

Note: You cannot "choose" the company. The government assigns one specific company to your district for a 3-year term.
